Shanghai Tower’s Main Structure Completed as Planned


SHANGHAI, CHINA – August 3, 2013 – As the last steel beam is hoisted to the top of Shanghai Tower, one of Shanghai’s major construction projects achieves a major milestone as its main structure is completed this morning. The tower currently stands at 580 meters with 125 floors.

The 6.8-meter-long beam was placed on a special shelf to receive final quality checks by engineers at 8 this morning. Fang Qingqiang, Project Director of Shanghai Tower Construction and Development Co., Ltd., gave the command to elevate the final steel beam and place it on its final position during the topping-out ceremony at 9:09am. By 9:29am, Fang announced that the Shanghai Tower’s main structure was successfully completed.

The construction of Shanghai Tower is a strategic decision of the Shanghai government after years of planning. Back in 1993, the initial stages of Pudong New Area’s reform, the area where Shanghai Tower, Jin Mao Tower and Shanghai World Financial Center now stand was the designated location of China’s super skyscraper complex. After 20 years of development, the triumvirate of super skyscrapers will form the summit of the city skyline when the Shanghai Tower is completed in 2015.

As the final masterpiece in the region, Shanghai Tower has learned from the two-decade experience of skyscraper developments in the Lujiazui hub. Shanghai Tower also paves the way for the world’s future supertall buildings by advocating green building, improving regional functions, enriching city space and boosting technological innovation. It follows the principle of being both sustainable and people-oriented, applying the most advanced concept and technology in all available fields to create an elite building that integrates four communities - vertical community, green community, smart community and cultural community into one.

Kong Qingwei, Chairman of Shanghai Tower Construction and Development Co., Ltd. said, “Shanghai Tower does not just duplicate a higher skyscraper.  We want to put into reality a great building deserved by a great city.”

Shanghai Tower transcends traditional architectural concepts to develop a new lifestyle. With the innovative idea of a “vertical community”, the tower is divided into several functional areas.  21 sky lobbies serve the purpose of plazas and squares, bringing people together throughout the day. Multiple services and facilities located in different areas not only support people in the tower, but also improve the funtional configuration in Lujiazui area.

Sustainability is at the core of Shanghai Tower’s development. Striving to create a “green community”, Shanghai Tower incorporated many practices that generate a positive environmental impact and create a healthy indoor environment.

By integrating the network, optical fiber, ICT and RFID devices into one building, Shanghai Tower applies the new technologies of Web Internet, Internet of Things and Cloud Computing to form a “smart community” capable of processing and smart-filtering massive data. The cloud computing server rooms inside the tower are designed to serve 15,000 to 20,000 individuals.

Finally, Shanghai Tower also promotes a “cultural community” by bringing core cultural characteristics such as museum and bookstores into the building. Ma Weidu the founder of Guan Fu Museum said, “The museum located in Shanghai Tower will help spread the rich Chinese traditional culture to the rest of the world. ” Guan Fu Museum signed the No.001 Letter of Intent for Lease of Commercial Space with Shanghai Tower.

Integration of Advanced Architectural Technologies

Shanghai Tower employs several cutting-edge technologies  in construction.

60,000 square meters of concrete was poured into Shanghai Tower’s foundation surface at one time, breaking a civil construction world record. Shanghai Tower continues to overcome the challenges in designing and installing the world’s largest and highest flexible curtain wall.

Shanghai Tower adopts the Building Information Modeling (BIM) in every phase of its construction. “Shanghai Tower faces lots of challenges, including the processing of mass information, a long construction period and having up to 3,500 workers working at the same time.” Fang said, “The application of BIM ensures a smooth construction process.”

Not only  is it the first building in China to achieve both the LEED Gold certification issued by the US Green Building Council and the China Three-Star Green Building Design Label issued by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, Shanghai Tower is also the highest double-certified green building in the world.

With the main construction completed, Shanghai Tower will inaugurate the leasing operations.

Located in the Lujiazui Financial and Trade Zone in Pudong New Area of Shanghai, Shanghai Tower is record-breaking 632-meter-tall skyscraper that combines high-level offices, super five-star hotels, boutiques, sightseeing, cultural recreation and distinctive meeting facilities. Currently, Shanghai Tower has reached 580 meters as the main tower construction has been completed and topped out. It is planned to be completed and put into use in 2015.
